FRIDAY, November 24, 2017

The ocean was a sheet of glass today. Water temp close to the beach was between 53 and 54-degrees. Warmer as you got further from land. Heard there were a few stripers caught by trollers along the 3-mile line, but haven't confirmed.

Tautog bite was good along Martha's Landing. Anglers are still having to weed through a lot of small fish to get their keeper.

Fishing near the Bass Grounds was slow with only a few sea bass and tautog caught.

Capt. Chris Mizurak on the headboat, "Angler" reported decent ocean fishing today with a mix of sea bass, bluefish, flounder and triggerfish for his fishermen. Largest flounder weighed 5 lbs. Mike Farr caught a trigger. Most of the action was on squid over an artificial reef.

Capt. Monty Hawking on the headboat, "Morning Star" had his anglers fishing with clams, squid and cut bait and had sea bass up to 17-inches and flounder up to 23-inches.

WEDNESDAY, November 22, 2017

Tog fishing around the Rt. 50 Bridge has been hot with big fish in the mix. Crabs and sand fleas are doing the trick.

Also seeing small stripers around the pilings with an occassional keeper.

My foreign correspondent in South Jersey said that the bulk of the migrating stripers are still up off Barneget, NJ. A lot of small stripers are being caught from the beach off Stone Harbor in South Jersey.

My foreign correspondent in Central New Jersey said that the bite in Brielle was hot up until last weekend and it has died off. Bunker seem to have left the area. Hopefully moving south. Best reports have said that fish were thick around Beach Haven which is about an hour north of Atlantic City. Inshore temp is 52 degrees

3:56 PM - Anglers on the charter boat, "Lucky Break" had a great day tautog fishing around the rocks at the South Jetty and along Martha's Landing. They had 7 keepers, measuring up to 19-inches, and over 80 throwbacks. All on crabs.

THURSDAY, November 16, 2017

10:26 AM - Tilefish regulations have been set. For more details see our Breaking News Section. In summary:

The recreational season will run from May 1-October 31, 2017 and will close as of December 15, 2017, when this rule becomes effective. When the fishery re-opens in May, recreational fishermen will have limits of:

7 fish per person on Coast Guard inspected for-hire vessels (party boats)
5 fish per person on uninspected for-hire vessels (charter boats), and
3 fish per person on private recreational vessels.

Amendment 6 also calls for new permitting and reporting requirements for private recreational vessels. These measures are not being implemented at this time. Because they require additional development and outreach, they will be implemented later through a separate rule, and will not be in effect for the 2018 fishing season that starts on May 1, 2018.

12:00 PM - Anglers on the headboat, "Morning Star" limited out on black sea bass during this mornings trip so they headed back early to beat the gale force wind warnings for this afternoon.

3:08 PM - Sheepshead are still snapping around the South Jetty with fish caught there this morning.

Mostly undersize stripers are being caught around the Rt. 50 Bridge, but there are a good number of them to keep you busy with light tackle. A few keepers have been caught.

The tautog bite around the bridge is good.

WEDNESDAY, November 15, 2017

I spoke to my foreign correspondent in New Jersey and he said that they are hitting the stripers pretty hard off Asbury Park and Brielle. Nice size fish. Water temp up there in the ocean (inside 3-miles) is around 53 degrees. I just checked the water temp in the OC Inlet and it is registering around 54-55 degrees. Getting close to game time!

Rt. 50 Bridge was packed again this morning. The tautog bite is good off the bridge during the day and anglers are catching small stripers at night.

TUESDAY, November 14, 2017

The Rt. 50 Bridge is packed with anglers so that can only mean that the stripers and the tautog are snapping!

MONDAY, November 13, 2017

Looks like big stripers are being caught off Sandy Hook, NJ (240 miles from OC). Big fish. Over 50 pounders.

Anglers are catching short stripers (and a few keepers) while casting bucktails from the Rt. 50 Bridge. Interestingly, some of the small ones are covered in lice. Migrating fish.

I got a call yesterday asking if I could head on over to Sunset Marina to take a picture of a swordfish and an Opah caught on the "Primary Search". Unfortunately, I was in New Jersey at the time, but the guys did arrive with a nice size swordfish and an Opah, the first I have ever heard of caught in Ocean City. The Opah weighed 105 lbs. and ate a strip of bonita in 59-degree water in the Poor Man's Canyon. Fishing on the "Primary Search" was James Doerzbach, Tommy Clark, Brian Stewart and Capt. Austin Ensor. According to info found on the internet, Opah's are also known as moonfish or sunfish and are large, colorful (orange), deep-bodied pelagic fish typicaly found in deep water tropical to temperate ocean waters. They are rarely caught by recreational anglers It is a warm blooded fish that retains heat with insulating layers of fat. They are known to school with tuna. Congrat's to the crew on the "Primary Search".

SUNDAY, November 12, 2017

There is a good tautog bite around the South Jetty, Rt. 50 Bridge and along the rocks at Martha's Landing.

Capt. Chris Mizurak on the headboat, "Angler" reported good sea bass and flounder fishing today. Pete and Mairi Donohue caught flatties up to 4.5 lbs. Richard Wright had a flounder and a 2 lb. sea bass. Jerry Fox had flounder up to 3.5 lbs. All caught on squid at an offshore wreck.

Doug Coats caught a 21.5-inch tautog on a green crab at the Rt. 50 Bridge. Fi

Anglers on the headboat, "Judith M" fished just outside the Jackspot and had non-stop action on sea bass, bluefish, bonito and mackerel.

Anglers on the headboat, "Morning Star" saw limits of sea bass for about 1/3 of those onboard. They also got into some triggerfish, bluefish and bonita along with the odd flounder and sheepshead.

SUNDAY, November 5, 2017

We are back at it starting work on the big Winter Issue that comes out on January 1st. If you have any pictures of catches you can email them to coastalfisherman@comcast.net. If you want to report your catches for the online fishing report, either email me or just call the office at 410-213-2200.

Anglers are banging away on small stripers around the Rt. 90 Bridge. Casting paddletails on light tackle has worked well.

Those fishing on local headboats are finding good sea bass fishing and even some nice flounder still snapping on ocean structure.

SATURDAY, November 4, 2017

Yesterday, the anglers on the "Primary Search" ended up with a bunch of mahi, a 190 lb. bigeye tuna, a swordfish and another swordfish that they released. All in the Baltimore.

Anglers fishing on ocean structure have been finding good sea bass band flounder fishing. The flounder action in the bay has also been good, but the throwback ratio is incredibly high right now. East Channel and Thorofare top spots.

FRIDAY, November 3, 2017

10:11 AM - Just got a report that the "Primary Search" has 30 mahi in the box and a nice swordfish in the box. They are on an overnighter in the Baltimore.

THURSDAY, November 2, 2017

John Thomas and his wife got into a good flounder bite during the afternoon and ended up with 6 keepers and over 30 throwbacks. All were hooked by the Rt. 50 Bridge on squid, whines and Gulp.

On the charter boat, "Fish Bound", Mike Hinton caught a 10.3 lb. flounder on a teaser/Gulp combo. He also had an 8.4 pounder. Their charter had a boat limit of sea bas plus 18 flounder.

Anglers on the headboat, "Angler" had good sea bass and flounder ishing today on an artificial reef. Carmelo Montoya caught a 6.75 lb. flounder on a bucktail.

WEDNESDAY, November 1, 2017

There is still a flounder bite going on, particularly in the Thorofare and the East Channel. Water temp is down into the low-to-mid 60's.

The White Marlin Open has decided to pay out all the winners of the 2017 tournament. You can read the press release in our Breaking News section.

On Sunday anglers fishing on the headboat, "Judith M" had a good day at the Great Eastern Reef, returning with good numbers of sea bass weighing up to 3 lbs. along with bluefish, flounder and a bonito.

8:05 PM - The "Work Release" went on an overnight to the Norfolk Canyon, returning today with 25 mahi and a 55 lb. yellowfin tuna. The highlight of the trip was a 161 swordfish.

"Primary Search" caught a swordfish, estimated at over 100 lbs.

Boats that headed out to the African Queen had a good day catching sea bass with several returning with boat limits.

In the bay, flounder action was good all weekend but was dominated by short fish. Sheepshead continue to be caught around the South Jetty. Today a 14 pounder was hooked along the rocks.

The rocks along Martha's Landing in the West Channel are loaded with tautog, but unfortunately the vast majority are too small to keep.

With Capt. Seth at the wheel today, anglers on the bay headboat "Tortuga" had 12 keep flounder today while drifting in the East Channel.

The headboat "Angler" headed to an ocean wreck today and found good sea bass and flounder fishing with knotheads uo to 2.5 lbs. and flatties up to 3.5 lbs.

WEDNESDAY, October 18, 2017

Sorry everyone. Been out of commission, but as I get reports I will continue to keep you updated.

Looks like there are some nice size yellowfins in 500 fathoms between the Washington and Norfolk Canyons. Nice size!

There are also still some good size wahoo out there also.

Swordfish are up and down the line closer to shore.

Jake Glavich caught a pair of 19 1/2 in flounder slow trolling minnow and Gulp combo in the West Channel

On the charter boat “Lucky Break , Eric Burch caught a 22- inch flounder in the Fish Bowl on a Zman

SATURDAY, October 7, 2017

Dolphin keep rolling in for offshore anglers and sheepshead continue to bite around the South Jetty. Tautog are also being caught right. Water temp is around 70 degrees. now around the South Jetty and along the rocks in the West Channel off Martha's Landing.

I also received a report of an angler fishing at Little Gull Shoal who hooked into a 50 lb. cobia that he found under a sea turtle that was on the surface.

Offshore, the charter boat, "Boss Hogg" went to the Baltimore Canyon and had 47 dolphin and 29 blueline tilefish.

Charter boat, "Marli" had 20 dolphin in the Baltimore.

Capt. Dale Lisi on the charter boat, "Foolish Pleasure" told me that he made the 70+ mile run but all they found were dolphin.

Sean Whaley caught a 27 1/4-inch flounder on a live mullet from the Rt. 50 Bridge. Fish weighed 10.44 lbs.

FRIDAY, October 6, 2017

It was a pretty good day in the bay. Flounder were snapping in the East Channel and the amazing sheepshead bite at the South Jetty keeps rolling along.

On the charter boat, "On the Run", Donna Harman caught a pair of nice size sheepshead on sand fleas at the South Jetty. Her largest measured 26-inches and weighed 11.5 lbs. Her other fish was n 8.5 pounder.

Capt. Nick Clemente on the charter boat, "Get Sum" told me that the morning bite was slot but it really turned on in the afternoon. His anglers ended up with 5 keeper flounder and some throwbacks. All caught in the East Channel, just north of the bridge.

Rhonada Daub caught a 22-inch sheepshead on a sand flea at the South Jetty.

Yesterday, Paul Mele was surfcasting off Assateague when he caught and released a 48-inch red drum. Hooked it on fresh bunker.

Offshore, the dolphinpalooza continues.

Charter boat, "Rhonda's osprey" had 20 mahi from the Baltimore.

Charter boat, "Boss Hogg" had 50 dolphin and 16 tilefish in the Poor Man's.

WEDNESDAY, October, 4, 2017

I received a call today about a rumor going around that the DNR put a size and lower creel limit on sheepshead. This is not true! They are working on it, but it is not in place and will need to go through the proper procedures before it goes into effect. Looks like the leading candidate is 2 per person which is reasonable.

"Sea Flame" went 1 for 2 on white malrin and caught 20 mahi in the lower Poor Man's Canyon.

TUESDAY, October 3, 2017

Sheepshead are still snapping at the South Jetty along with drum and keeper size tautog.

On the charter boat, "Lucky Break" John Harvey boated 3 sheepshead and a 20-inch tog at the South Jetty.

Mike Johnson, Jim Willey, Rick Findley and Dawn McGee combined to catch 14 sheepshead, 4 flounder, 2 red drum, 1 black drum, 2 tog and released 2 other red drum, all while fishing at the South Jetty and in the East Channel (flounder).

MONDAY, October 2, 2017

Beautiful day today in OC. Nights have definitely cooled off so water temps should be dropping pretty good.

It looks like the mahi bite was pretty good with some nice size fish showing up, a change from what we saw for most of the season.

On Saturday, the "Brown Dog" headed to the Poor Man's and a pair of mahi including a 29 pounder. They said it was a long, rough ride home.

On Saturday, anglers on the charter boat, "On the Run" had 4 nice size sheepshead that were caught on sand fleas at the South Jetty. All weighed between 5 and 10 lbs.

Also on Saturday, the "Bubblehead" went out to 100 fathoms just south of the Poor Man's and returned with 25 mahi in the box.

I spoke to our foreign correspondent in New Jersey and he caught some big bluefish and small stripers in the rivers that flow from the bay in Ocean City. His stripers all looked to be resident fish (no sea lice), but he did hear of a few caught from the beach in Central Jersey.

I also spoke to an angler today who said that their were a lot of longfins being seen off New Jersey and there are some yellowfins off our coast in 500 fathoms. Plenty of dolphin around and they are good size.

FRIDAY, September 29, 2017

Looks like sheepshead are still snapping good at the South Jetty. Because of the number being hooked, the state is looking into possible size limits on sheepshead. The fish is already under the grouper classification, so the creel limit is a ridiculous 25 fish per person/per day.

Anglers on the charter boat, "Get Sum" returned with 4 flounder in the box. Caught on Gulp. Two came from the East Channel and one each in the Fish Bowl and Middle Channel.

On the charter boat, "Lucky Break", angler Don Roberts caught a 20-inch flounder in the Fish Bow. Used a Gulp for bait.

WEDNESDAY, September 27, 2017

Special thanks to the members of MSSA's Atlantic Chapter for inviting me to speak at their meeting last night. Bunch of really nice folks and are committed to improving recreational fishing in our area. And they can get things done! They meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Lion's Club down by the OC Airport. I encourage everyone to join. Nice group!

TUESDAY, September 26, 2017

On the charter boat, "Lucky Break", Bryan Pugner caught an 18 1/2-inch flounder in the Fish Bowl while using Gulp for bait. They also had several throwbacks while fishing during the outgoing tide.

MONDAY, September 25, 2017

Charter boat, "Marli" had 5 longfins and 6 yellowfins in the Baltimore Canyon.

Charter boat, "Boss Hogg" had 6 longfins and 3 yellowfins in the Baltimore Canyon.

"Espadon" had 2 wahoo and some dolphin in the Washington.

FRIDAY, September 22, 2017

11:23 AM - Robert Martin just swung by the Coastal Fisherman office to have his picture taken with the largest sheepshead of the year and possibly a new MD State Record. The beast was close to a state record and was weighed on my hand scale (state record is 17 lbs. 8 oz.) so I sent him to a local tackle shop to have it weighed on a certified scale. Check back for results. Fish was caught at the South Jetty on a green crab. The sheepshead are really snapping at the South Jetty. Yesterday, anglers had a good day catching them there on sand fleas.
