9:17 AM - Happy Father's Day!!!

What a way to get the day started. Capt. Dale Lisi on the charter boat, "Foolish Pleasures" called this morning to ask for a picture to be taken with a big mako shark his anglers caught during an overnight trip to the Norfolk Canyon. Big mako weighed 636 lbs. They also had 12 nice size yelowfins and 2 mahi. The mako ate a skippy fillet at 11:00 last night and took 90 minutes to get to the boat. They were fishing in 500 fathoms. The tunas came from 200 fathoms. Anglers were Rob Reusch, Derek Fisher, Jason Kilby, Harvey Fisher #1, Harvey Fisher #2 and Nick Benjamin.

Updated yesterdays report.

1:21 PM - The first blue marlin was caught today by anglers on the "Chaser".

6:44 PM - Very slow day offshore today. A lot of boats struggled.

Charter boat, "Reel Chaos" had 2 bigeye tuna and 3 yellowfins in the Wilmington Canyon. Bigeyes were between 80 and 100 lbs.

Charter boat, "Boss Hogg" had 9 yellowfins in the Wilmington. 300 fathoms. Went 8 for 10 on one pass. Fishing with Capt. Brian Porter were John Piwowarski, Scott Spencer, Keith Scott, Linda and Dan Rohleder and Joyce and Roger Chabot.

8:14 AM - Just an incredibly beautiful day in Ocean City and the parking lots at the marinas and the public boat ramps are PACKED. 12:42 PM - As expected, the Maryland Department of Natural Sciences just released a statement saying that they will not recognize the 644.9 lb. thresher shark caught last weekend by Nick Skidmore as a new Maryland State Record because the anglers shot the fish prior to tying it off the their boat to tow back to the dock. This has been a long-standing rule for the MD DNR. It was still one heckuva catch by Nick and his buddies!

Here is the official statement:

After careful consideration, the Department of Natural Resources Fishing and Boating Services has carefully made the decision to disqualify Nick Skidmore's 644.9 thresher shark. Under the department's State Records Rules and Procedures and Official FishMaryland Rules, fish that have been snagged, shot, gaffed*, speared, scaled, or mutilated are not eligible. (*Gaffing is illegal in the Chesapeake Bay, but is allowed for securing and boating fish in ocean waters. Gaffing (including use of detachable "flying gaffs") is a common and accepted method of boating fish for ocean and offshore fishing).

The current 642 pound thresher shark record held by Brent Applegit still stands.
