FRIDAY, September 22, 2017

11:23 AM - Robert Martin just swung by the Coastal Fisherman office to have his picture taken with the largest sheepshead of the year and possibly a new MD State Record. The beast was close to a state record and was weighed on my hand scale (state record is 17 lbs. 8 oz.) so I sent him to a local tackle shop to have it weighed on a certified scale. Check back for results. Fish was caught at the South Jetty on a green crab. The sheepshead are really snapping at the South Jetty. Yesterday, anglers had a good day catching them there on sand fleas.

12:34 PM - Robert Martin's sheepshead is a new Maryland State Record. It weighed an even 18 lbs. on the certified scale at the Ocean City Fishing Center. Congratulations Robert!

Richard Crosariol caught a 20.5-inch flounder on the outside of the South Jetty on a minnow and Gulp combination.

On the charter boat, "Fish Bound", anglers caught 7 sheepshead, 9 triggerfish, 2 keeper tautog and a black drum on Purnell's Reef. Capt. Kane said that big swells kept him closer to the beach than normal.

Charter boat, "No Quarter" went to below the Poor Man's and returned with 4 yellowfins, 3 dolphin, 1 wahoo and 5 white marlin releases.

Charter boat, "Marli" had 3 wahoo, 3 dolphin and a white marlin. They also released a white marlin during the trip to below the Poor Man's. The white marlin that was boated weighed 101 lbs.

THURSDAY, September 21, 2017

A few boats headed offshore and had a good day marlin fishing. The "Legasea" had 6 white releases and the "No Quarter" had 8 white marlin releases and a blue marlin release. They also had 3 yellowfin and 3 dolphin. They both ran south of the Baltimore Canyon.

The charter boat, "Marli" had a yellowfin tuna, 10 dolphin and a white marlin release in the Baltimore.

Sea bass were snapping pretty good on ocean structure. Anglers on both heaboat, "Angler" and "Morning Star" had good days.

On the charter boat, "Lucky Break" Erica Minton caught a weakfish at the South Jetty. Hooked it on a sand flea.

11:05 AM - Received a report that anglers spotted large numbers of cobia crusing the surface around Fenwick Shoal. They said that there were around 40 fish in 4 different schools. Federal waters are closed to cobia fishing, so fish found on Fenwick Shoal cannot be kept.

12:39 PM - Looks like out of the 40 boats in the Big Fish Classic, around a half dozen are waiting to fish the 36 hour window that goes from Saturday into Sunday. There have been some fish caught today, so I expect some action at the scale.

9:00 PM - Scales closed at the Big Fish Classic which was postponed from its original date in August due to bad weather. We didn't see any fish weighed tonight with most all of the 34 boats that left today staying out overnight. Tomorrows action at the scale should be strong. Should be interesting to see how many boats fish this weekend, and I'm not talking about in the tournament. A lot of folks are making arrangements to get their boats taken out of the water on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Let's home Irma is easy on us.

WEDNESDAY, September 6, 2017

Wind is puffing pretty good in OC today. I did see a couple of headboats fishing north of the Rt. 50 Bridge. One was in the East Channel and the other in the Fish Bowl.

Reminder that the Bahia Marina Flounder Pounder is this Sunday. Lines are in the water from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. Scales close at 5:00 pm. Anglers can fish from the Fenwick Ditch down to the Assateague Bridge and out to the South Jetty. This is always a fun flounder tournament that isn't expensive at all to get in, plus Bahia always has a spread of hamburgers and hotdogs at the weigh-in.

On Monday is the famous Ocean City Fishing Center Spot Tournament. All of the fishing is from the dock at the Fishing Center. Kids dominate the fun.

Spoke to one of the organizers of the Big Fish Classic this morning. Right now, all systems are go! Sounds like it could be somewhere between 35 and 45 boats.

I did hear that at least one boat headed offshore yesterday in some nasty weather. They went to the Baltimore Canyon and caught a couple of yellowfins and released a couple of white marlin. They then went up to the Wilmington, but I don't believe they did anything there.

A lot of boats are heading out tomorrow before the next wave of bad weather arrives.

Just drop off the goodss at the Sunset Marina office or at Sunset Provisions by the end of day on Wednesday.

THURSDAY, August 31, 2017

Just when I thought I had heard it all, today I found out that the changes to the cobia fishery announced by NOAA in a bulletin released on August 4th will not go into effect until January 1, 2018 even though their bulletin said "the management measures will be effective September 5, 2017". Nowhere in the bulletin does it say that the season will continue to be closed until January 1st. I spoke to NOAA to get clarification and their representative told me that "the bulletin could have been written better." You think so!!!! They basically announced changes in the size and creel for a season that is closed! Everyone I spoke to read it as the season is reopening on September 5th. Here's exactly what it says (just so everyone can see):

KEY MESSAGE:

NOAA Fisheries announces a final rule to change the following management measures for Atlantic Cobia (Georgia through New York):

* increase the recreational minimum size limit
* reduce the recreational bag limit
* establish a recreational vessel limit
* establish a commercial trip limit
* modify the recreational accountability measure

WHEN RULE WILL TAKE EFFECT:

The management measures will be effective September 5, 2017.

WHAT THIS MEANS:

For the Atlantic cobia recreational sector, the minimum size limit will increase from 33 inches fork length to 36 inches fork length.

The recreational bag limit will be modified to one fish per person per day, or six fish per vessel per day, whichever is more restrictive.

The rule will also modify the accountability measure for the recreational If the recreational and total catch limits (commercial and recreational combined) are exceeded, NOAA Fisheries will reduce the vessel limit, and if necessary, shorten the following season.

For the Atlantic cobia commercial sector, the rule will implement a commercial trip limit of two fish per person per day, or six fish per vessel per day, whichever is more restrictive.

This final rule is the result of Framework Amendment 4 recommended to NOAA Fisheries by the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic Fishery Management Councils.

These actions are expected to reduce the likelihood of exceeding the recreational and commercial Atlantic cobia catch limits in future years.

FORMAL FEDERAL REGISTER NAME/NUMBER: 82 FR 36344, published August 4, 2017

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Where do these regulations apply?

These regulations apply to the Atlantic group cobia, which extends from Georgia through New York.

3:37 PM - After analysis by their biologists, the Delaware Division of Fish & Wildlife have determined that the mackerel caught on the Delaware charter boat, "Martha Marie" and originally identified as a Spanish mackerel is actually a king mackerel and therefore is not a new Delaware State Record. After submitting the fish to the state, the Captain of the "Martha Marie", Les Clemmer, was notified last week by the DE Division of Fish & Wildlife confirming that his angler had indeed caught a Spanish mackerel and a state record certification would be processed. The fish did have external markings similar to a Spanish mackerel (which are hard to see in the submitted photo), but through further analysis, including internal disection of the fish, the determination was made that it is a king.
