Well I guess the cats out of the bag if you are reading this. Some of you may know me and some may not. So here goes nothing. My name is Loren and you can normally find me at Sunset Grille working, however, I do spend my free time (when I get it) offshore fishing.
Around 10 years ago I took a friend up on their offer, and my girlfriends and I found ourselves at Harbour Island looking for a specific boat with the name of “Maverick” on the back of it. We never thought our world would change when that alarm went off for us to head to the boat around 3:30am.
Some may say we were wild and crazy, but for me the experience was exhilarating and peaceful all in one. Something about being on the water with friends and no cell service made the day that much better! Who could want more? All of us girls had no idea what we were about to get ourselves into, but, I’ll never forget that September day.
We went 11-13 on white marlin, one spearfish, and caught a couple of mahi. Most of us caught our first white marlin, which ended with us jumping off the dock to keep the tradition going. However, the rush of adrenaline hooking up to two white marling simultaneously with one of my best friends (who is no longer with us) is just something you have to experience yourself. It sparked a desire in me that would take me places I never thought I’d be, and meet people that are in the sport fishing community today.
Unfortunately I have lost a lot of mentors along the way, but it’s their legacies that keep their spirit alive. So who knows maybe you’ll get to tell me your story about fishing because you never know who is reading. Women are competing in a male dominated sport and we are crushing it! So I’d like to get more of a female perspective about what fishing means to them and their experiences. A story is always someone’s personal memory that they get to share, and I must say that any day on the water is a great day.
